From Within the Surround is a collection of materials authored by Bryant Wells over a 2 year period (2018–2020) towards completion of the Graphic Design MFA at Yale School of Art. The materials are rendered as ‘trails,’ loosely configured around a central body of writing (divvied into four chapters) and intended to be navigated in an associative fashion.

Local Library
Local Library is a folder, a folder of folders, a directory of files and texts. It is the sibling of Local Radio and similarly only available on the YaleSecure network. Anyone can make changes to the structure and contents of Local Library. This folder is also a CMS — any changes will be reflected immediately on the website. There are no permissions, accounts, locked files, etc. This shared folder is a social agreement - a space to organize and locate documents that align with whatever it is you've been scratching at during your time here. -

NOAA
NOAA-19 orbits earth once every 1.5 hours. It travels at 17,000 mph, transmitting whatever it sees over radio as it passes. An image is sent at 137MHz, one value at a time. A series of encoded sounds unravel into an array of pixels. -

Shapeshifter: Ressurection
Silence arrives as acidic fogs settle in coastal Dallas. Wet, oily, asphalt refracts as the clouds wander. The voices grumble at 30hz, carried from 12th century Söğüt by a westward crawling storm's sferic, pushing through the air cavity of two 40cm subs mounted and sealed within the trunk of Noe's vintage Navigator. The words “two worlds, one sun”, embossed in chromium oxide on the frame shake from the action. After decades in estrangement, a posssessed disc speaks. -

Dawn Chorus
The collection of bird vocalizations that occur at the beginning of a new day is referred to as a dawn chorus. The term is a bit inadequate — birds in a dawn chorus don't actually sing together. They sing to communicate on a one to one basis. A single transmission at a time from a single source to a single client. Never in complete unison, always with a slight delay. The dawn chorus can only be compared with a human choir because it is the haphazard accumulation of individual singers rather than an actual ensemble. -

Sol 2156
The remote and unmanned camera at once creates an image and designates a site for extraction of information or resources. Panoramic shapes stiched together from NASA's Curiosity rover serve as a framework to juxtapose images of Earth and cultural sites of extraction designated by the use of the camera. -
